Bench basics

The skills every experiment rests on: working safely, measuring volumes, making solutions and checking concentrations.

  1. Know the hazards, the containment level and what to do when something spills before you touch a reagent.

  2. Almost every number in an experiment starts as a volume, so accurate pipetting comes first.

  3. Make the solutions everything else runs in, at the right concentration and pH.

  4. CentrifugationNot started

Separate cells, debris and precipitates, and learn why speed is set in g rather than rpm.

  5. Measure how much of something you have, and spot when a reading is outside the linear range.

  6. Plan replicates and controls so the result can actually answer your question.

  7. Record what you did and label what you made, so the work can be repeated and trusted.
